Abstract

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are crucial to economic growth and innovation, yet many struggle to maintain a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA). This study examines the strategic integration of innovation capability, operational efficiency, and brand image as key drivers of SCA among SMEs in the OR Tambo district, South Africa. A quantitative research approach was adopted, utilising structured questionnaires to collect data from SME owners and managers.  Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was analysed using Smart PLS version 4 to test the relationships among variables. Findings reveal that while SMEs recognise the importance of innovation, operational efficiency, and brand image, their implementation is inconsistent due to financial and technological constraints. Strategic integration serves as a mediating factor, aligning these factors to enhance competitiveness. However, the adoption of sustainability remains limited, highlighting the need for policy support, capacity-building initiatives, and improved access to financial and technological resources. This study provides empirical insights into SME competitiveness and offers actionable recommendations for SME owners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. Future research should explore sector-specific challenges and the role of digital transformation in SME sustainability.
